A List of Thematic Connections

 Avatar:

One movie that has the same thematic connections as The Kite Runner is Avatar. In this movie, the primary character befriends a group of aliens as part of the US Army’s scheme to mine the element “unobtainium,” which can only be found where the aliens reside. By becoming friends with them he finds out their secrets, the structure of the region, and the exact location of the element. After doing so he feels very guilty because they have accepted him as part of their own and he just betrayed them by telling the army their secrets. This relates to how Amir betrayed Hassan by running away while Hassan was being raped. The central character then tries to find redemption by protecting the aliens and going against his own species, the US army. Likewise, Amir was on a quest for redemption as he tried to bring Sohrab back to America with him. Thus, Avatar is a movie that has many of the same thematic connections as The Kite Runner.

Gridiron Gang:

Another movie that has the same thematic connections as The Kite Runner is Gridiron Gang. In this movie, there are two different gangs that hate each other. These gangs are looked down upon in society, as most of the members are in juvenile detention centres. However, their love for football and desire to be on the detention centre’s team unifies them. The gang members work together to win the tournament and redeem themselves in the eyes of society. During their journey on the road to redemption, a friend of someone from one of the gangs shoots a member of the other gang. The friend of the shooter feels very guilty about letting this happen, and he feels like it is his fault. This movie has the same thematic connections as The Kite Runner because there is redemption as the gang members work hard to win the football tournament, and guilt as one gang is responsible for the death of the member of another gang.

The Corner

One book that has the same thematic connections as The Kite Runner is The Corner. Most of the characters in this book are drug addicts who lost all their dreams. One of the characters decides to change and organises a community centre in an attempt to redeem himself. Most of the characters feel guilty about the fact that they try to be clean but keep falling back into the same bad habits. There is also a sense of betrayal as the friends of one character steal from each other and sleep with each other’s girlfriends. This book has the same thematic connections as The Kite Runner because there is redemption as one of the characters organises a community centre as an alternative to doing drugs, and guilt and betrayal as the friends of one character steal from each other and sleep with each other’s girlfriends.
